The MFA Program admits only 10 students each year, allowing a uniquely experimental dialogue to emerge between students and faculty.The program includes an eclectic mix of theory and practice, weekly visiting artists and curators, global courses, teaching, and exhibition opportunities, including the MFA Thesis Exhibitions, which are held in late spring at the Department’s 80WSE Galleries in New York City’s Greenwich Village.Over the past few years, the Steinhardt School has made a major new commitment to the Visual Arts, expanding faculty, and adding new facilities and courses in New York and abroad.
80WSE is an extension of the Department of Art and Art Professions in the NYU Steinhardt School.
Under the curatorial direction of Nicola Lees, 80WSE gallery presents contemporary and historical exhibitions, as well as experimental projects by noted artists and curators, produced in collaboration with faculty and students from the Department of Art and Art Professions.
The Department’s 80 Washington Square East Galleries, on Washington Square Park, will host curated exhibitions, screenings, and performances throughout the year.
The exhibition calendar will include: • the New York debut of the Papunya Tula Aboriginal Artists from Australia • a site-specific installation by photographer Charlie White in the Windows on Washington Square • a survey of work by the legendary artist and performer Stuart Sherman • an exhibition curated by critic and faculty member David Rimanelli • the Department’s MFA Thesis Exhibitions in the spring The Commons and Rosenberg Galleries and the Einstein Auditorium, located in the main Art Department Building in the East Village, will host public exhibitions, performances, and visiting artist talks each week.
The Department draws upon a faculty of acclaimed artists, scholars, and critics.
It offers programs and courses that integrate technical skills with theoretical understanding within the context of a world-class university setting.
New additions to the Art Department’s core faculty this year include: • renowned painter Ross Bleckner • conceptual artist Trisha Donnelly • sculptor Carol Bove They join other recently hired studio faculty Lyle Ashton Harris, Sue de Beer, Jesse Bransford, David Rimanelli, Kevin Mc Coy, and Maureen Gallace.
This fall, with artist and faculty member Peter Campus as Director, the Art Department’s newly renovated gallery spaces in Washington Square and the East Village will begin an expanded program of exhibitions and public events.
NYU Steinhardt’s MFA in Studio Art program offers students the opportunity to study with accomplished artists and scholars within an interdisciplinary setting.
The two-year program provides students with private studios and access to facilities in painting, printmaking, ceramics, photography, digital media, and sculpture.
