By emphasizing the development of professional self-efficacy in occupational therapy students, educators can support and maintain the use of occupation as a central philosophy and core value of our profession.

By supporting the development of core professional attributes early in education, faculty can support the development of future practitioners who will maintain the use of occupation as the core of our profession, and will ensure that future occupational therapists do continue to use occupation as central to their practice.

A study was conducted to evaluate student participation in a community-based service learning experience offered in the Masters of Occupational Therapy (OT) Program at the University of St.

Augustine for Health Sciences (USAHS) to identify how students’ perceptions of their self-efficacy change after they participate in a service-learning experience.

In my thesis, I explore how this relationship connects to me being an artist and becoming an expressive arts therapist. Firstly, I discuss my personal relationship with God as Creator, how it was built and how it has guided my life.

I also add to my biblical understanding of God as Creator and how it reflects on important themes such as suffering, sin and salvation.Through carefully facilitated experiences, and subsequent enhanced professional characteristic development the students then develop core professional attributes.Collectively, the development of these core professional attributes contributes to a greater sense of self-efficacy and improved clinical reasoning for participants.The exploration and presentation of a particular performance allowed her to identify five aspects which enabled her to become an artist: recognizing her own wound, allowing herself to be led by the images, cultivating inner presence, retracing, fragmenting and integrating her stories and being permeable to the context.The five aspects discovered were also recognized in her practicum with different populations as an Expressive Arts therapist.Using the lens of activity theory, this is one account of a healthcare profession that pays unusual attention to patients' whole lives through genres that mediate shared agency between the caregiver and patient.It is also, however, the story of the ways in which this identity, as a uniquely occupation-based discipline, becomes obscured as therapists translate their work to genres created and controlled by other, more powerful activity systems.Following an exploration of health and illness from an occupational perspective, the position of occupational therapists as agents for promoting health according to their view of occupation is considered.This electronic version is made publicly available by the University of Adelaide in accordance with its open access policy for student theses. This thesis may incorporate third party material which has been used by the author pursuant to Fair Dealing exception.The analysis of total scores indicates an improvement in confidence after participation in the experiential learning activities offered on each campus.There was a significant difference in the total scores for pretest (M= 460, SD= 64.4) and posttest (M=526, SD= 54.7) in student confidence levels (t(55)=-9.6, p=.000).
